Family Law

By DivorceNet ·

Family law is the body of law that governs the legal end of intimate relationships — separation, divorce, common-law breakups — and the issues that follow them. In Ontario, that means custody and access, decision-making for children, child and spousal support, division of property, and the negotiation of marriage and cohabitation agreements.

Most separating couples never see the inside of a courtroom. The bulk of family-law work happens through negotiation, mediation, or collaborative practice. The lawyers' job is to make sure whatever agreement comes out of that process is fair, durable, and properly documented.
