5 Step for Choosing a Divorce Lawyer
Choosing the right family lawyer makes an enormous difference to how your divorce unfolds. Here is a five-step process used by many DivorceNet members' clients.
Step one — define what you actually need. Are you looking for a negotiator, a litigator, a collaborative-process lawyer? Match the lawyer's style to your goal.
Step two — start with referrals. Ask other professionals (accountants, mediators, counsellors) for the names of family lawyers they trust. They've seen who shows up well for clients.
Step three — interview at least two. A short consultation tells you a lot. Pay attention to whether they listen, set realistic expectations, and explain costs clearly.
Step four — read the retainer agreement carefully. Understand the fee structure, what's billable, and what isn't. There should be no surprises later.
Step five — trust your instincts. You'll be working closely with this person for months. If something feels off in the first meeting, keep looking.
